United States Editorial Review
The book "Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven but Nobody Wants to Die: Bioethics and the Transformation of Health Care in America" provides a comprehensive overview of key bioethical issues and their historical context. Though the book is written from a moderate liberal perspective and might be incomplete for a bioethics class, it presents actual situations and gives readers a lot to Consider. The authors describe bioethics as a new discipline arising out of the sweeping changes health care has undergone in the twentieth century. The authors argue that the increasing emphasis on the bioethical principle of autonomy in health care has not been matched by a corresponding concern for justice compelling but acknowledge that people have a right to an adequate and affordable level of health care. The book is well written, authoritative, yet engaging and accessible. The main faulty issue in the regulation of healthcare identified by the authors is the failure of the federal government to provide basic healthcare to all Americans. The book is likely to become a textbook in bioethics courses at universities; however, the authors had provided straw-man articulations of their opponents that might patronize those who disagree with them.
