  • Ahmet Mithat Efendi's detective novel called Mısır-ı Cinayat - Secrets of Murders - which produces works in many literary genres in our literature; It has become one of the author's works that deserve praise, with its mastery of fiction in the flow of events and its strong portrayal of its characters. The novel, which begins with the discovery of the body of a young girl, continues in a gripping manner with the discovery of a second person who was killed by making it look like a suicide, and takes on a completely different situation as a result of the cooperation and careful follow-up of police chief Osman Sabri and Muharrir Efendi. The novel, which criticizes the justice system and trial procedures of the period by revealing bribery and nepotism, ends with a surprising ending, reflecting the author's masterful style.Ahmet Mithat Efendi (1844-1912) is one of the leading writers of the Tanzimat period. He started his writing career as a journalist and added story and novel writing to his writing career, writing nearly one hundred and fifty works in various fields. Since he sees writing as a tool to educate the public, he is always in dialogue with the reader in his works full of encyclopedic information. He started journalism in the Tuna newspaper in Sofia, first as a writer and then as an editor-in-chief. In Baghdad, where he went with Mithat Pasha, he deepened his knowledge on Western and Eastern cultures by entering a very broadly cultured environment, including names such as painter Osman Hamdi Bey, Muhammed Zühavi and Şirazlı Bakır Can Muattar. He establishes his own printing house in his house in Tahtakale and starts publishing his books. On the other hand, he continues his journalism with the newspapers and magazines he publishes such as Devir, Bedir, Dağarcık and Kırkambar.Because of his writings, the Abdulaziz administration exiled him along with Namık Kemals. During his three-year exile in Rhodes, he opened a school for children and started teaching and wrote his first novels. When he returned to Istanbul, he held various civil servant positions and founded Tercüman-ı Hakikat, one of the longest-running newspapers in the history of the Turkish press. We will continue to include the selected works of Ahmet Mithat, who writes on almost every subject, especially with new techniques, in our Turkish Literature Classics Series. Show more
